Please spread the word people have to be informed about this.
Even if there is only a low chance of this to happen, people should be aware of it and have the chance to oppose such a decision.

There will be a voting in the EU Parliament taking place on May 5th 2009 to restrict the use of internet within the EU.

" The internet as we know it is at risk because of proposed new EU rules going through end of April. Under the proposed new rules, broadband providers will be legally able to limit the number of websites you can look at, and to tell you whether or not you are allowed to use particular services. It will be dressed up as ‘new consumer options' which people can choose from. People will be offered TV-like packages - with a limited
number of options for you to access [...]"

Thanks for posting this. I'm encouraged to see some others are trying to warn people about what's happening...

Alas, I do not think there is a "low" chance of this Orwellian scenario happening. Indeed, electronic spying on everyone in the U.S. is already happening (under the guise of being "necessary" to "protect" us from "those people"). This is not just tragic, it's very dangerous...

Wake up, folks! Do something!

hm.. ô_o I´m not sure, maybe it´s really just a rumor .. Living in Austria, I never heard of that before and we do have news channels that are not under " a politician" . We just had a teacher protest going on in the whole state cause of the new school system, teachers should have to work two more hours .. ( their free time is about 4 months in a year) guess what? After the protest they decided against the two more working hours and cancelled five free days of the students in austria . Til now teachers had to work on these days and now they should do it kind like with the students .. What happened ? - another protest. ( they got two free days back for one day protesting . The protest looked like a party, by the way )
People are protesting against everything here. (which is good, cause they know their rights, but sometimes they are crossing the lines.. You have to think of the state, too. Not at least because of the economic crises. It hit germany and it will hit austria, too. It already does, but not that bad..)
Whatever.. I just can´t imagine something important like that going on and no one recognizing it o_o ?
I don´t think the EU will ( if it´s not a rumor) really try to do this. Not in times like these. Not like that.

It happened in china.. the whole internet thing...

They wouldn't dare do that in the US.

I mean look what happened when the bill in my state of California was passed to not allow gays to marry. Oh gawd, I had to stay in traffic for an extra hours because of the protest. Turned out to be a national thing afterward lol.

People here are very open. Even conservatives get a bit loud when they don't like something...

as you say you're living in australia. your lifestyle there is completly different. the ppl are. the system is.
here ppl don't strike anymore. ppl forget about their rights. if we do it mostly dosent help.
this is not something they decited yesterday. its not really recent.
check on youtube/google/whatever you want to about 'net neutaliaty', 'reporters speech', 'censorment'
and then concider if this info you're given here REALLY is that irrelevant.
btw. since you mentioned germany;
also here only few ppl noticed that the internet is censored since the last few months.
did you know it?
did the media make a big fuss about it?
no.
think hard why.
